USA USA: Explaining AFL to America The guy asks how long has this game been around.... 1877 My beloved Collingwood Magpies have been in the competition since 1892
One of your Melbourne boys Brad Wing was punter for the New York Giants. Note that they wear helmets here. The future of the game might be in danger due to head injuries. Many parents won't let the kids play football due to the increasing bad publicity over the link of concussions to early dementia.
Yeah its a constant battle to keep contact sport...over here any head knock results (these days) in being sent off for the rest of the game...high level doctors are hired by the teams to evaluate every knock...plus young kids can wear "soft helmets" to protect them when they are young... A bit dorky, but keeps the parents happy...
They're trying to make kids avoid heading the ball when playing soccer over here. When i was coaching U14 Soccer a few years ago, we were not allowed to even practice headers and there was a thought that on corners you weren't allowed to kick the ball in the air! Given how long these sports have been around, people are so over protective these days!
Are the AFL games shown on ESPN? I still watch NFL games but lately the FIFA World Cup is more exciting and so was the last Winter Olympics.
Well...we lost...despite scoring the first five goals it was scores level at three quarter time...so the entire season came down to the last quarter! We even lead that but the West Coast Eagles kept coming back at the Collingwood Magpies and were in front at the final siren... Maybe this was a bad omen at the beginning of the game where fans make banners for the team to run through every game... <iframe width="640" height="360" src="" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> The Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley ran down to thank and console the banner makers...class act. West Coast - 11 goals - 13 points - 79 Collingwood - 11 goals - 8 points - 74 The Pies look good for next year! L
As an added bonus...Top fifty goals. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> Last goal? 80 meters...and very high so...more like 95 meters
