Proud Army Brat searching for info on Grandfather in WW2 shot 9/1/44 near Verdun France

    Proud Army Brat through a couple of generations! Currently looking for more information on my grandfather, Staff Sergeant Donald L. Smith (Infantry) whom was shot near Verdun, France September 1, 1944. Looking for anything really, just want to know more about his time during the war. He died in his late 50s due to lung cancer as he only had 1 lung bc the other had to be removed from being wounded. Only book our family has is relating to the Red Diamonds.
    His serial # 6667218. He was shot another time I believe near Metz...not sure when though.    ​
