Where can I find technical data on the Type XXI U-Boat from and lots of it? [ 17. January 2006, 11:23 AM: Message edited by: Richard42 ]
I think Herr Kaleun our gracious U-Boot expert can help you with that one but until he comes on let me make a suggstion and look up a few titles. Richard, check with Schiffer publications in their naval history for the Boot you are looking for. Author is Siegfried Breyer.... " German U-Boat Type XXI " one of the best books on the U-boots is Eberhard Rössler's unreal work " The U-Boat " it is big and heavy and worth the price. viele Glück !
Eric thanks for your help got the book today (Siegfried Breyer..German U-Boat Type XXI) And I like it Well that's two down I am on the look out for one on the Type IX any ideas any one. Ps the other one I got was on the Type VII by Robert C. Stern just to give you all an idea what sort of lay out I am looking for.
Richard, You should also try UKBookworld for second-hand books. Think I've personally kept them in business this year.
To my knowledge, there isn't a book that covers the Type IX...which is curious since this type accounted for the most tonnage sunk in WW2. With full voice, I second Erich's recommendation of Rössler's book...well worth every penny. I also recommend David Miller's "U-boats: The Illustrated History of the Raiders of the Deep."...Great overview of all boat types, weapons, and equipment...out of print now but can be found used CHEAP!
Yes my search hit a dead end very strange well may be one day some one will write a book on it. sooner than latter I hope.
Over the years there have been a number of very detailed articles in magazines such as Warship International and Warship Quarterly that covered the Type XXI. I have some of these currently but not all I have seen.
Richard go to uboat.net and ask the question(s) about the IX Boot on their forums, someone will come up with a response, or even go to the German language sites such as: http://f1.parsimony.net/forum/62/
Siegfried Breyer..German U-Boat Type XXI Thanks for that tip good read as for other search well one day some one will write a book. Thanks for your help Eric.
Richard. Type XXI U-boats also known as the Elktrobcote were the first submarines designed to operate entirely submerged rather than as surface ships that could submerge as a temporary akward mode of operation. Between 1943 and 1945 118 boats of this type were built by Blolm+Voss of Hamburg,Ag of Bremen. Most were scrapped after the war but 8 were taken by the allies for evaluation trials. Romeo class submarine:The soviet project b33 submarine class derives from the type XXI boats.
