    Gents :

On 3 August 1943 my cousin Hans Baer of 4./NJG 3 shot down a 605 squadron Mossie over the sea. precise details of area are still not confirmed ....... yet

question: what type of Mossie was the 605th flying during August of 43 and can someone place a scan on the this thread of said Moaquito ?

    thank you

    Erich ♫

That would have been a Mossie FB VI, I think Erich.

    Crew;
    F/O Albert Victor Aylott, Pilot
    F/O Percival Samuel Evans, Navigator

Both are still MIA, commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial.

    Serial I dunno.

fantastic gentlemen ! intersting to that my cousin on the previous night nearly lost his life or maybe it was the same niight once he landed. His crew and himself were all WIA in their Do 217N-1 at their airfield by a Mossie intruder from I believe the 418th nfs, and considering a strafing kill......

the Do 217 was 80 % damaged/destroyed, scratch one big boy Dornier

    many thanks

    Erich

The two photos above are of two random FBVI Mosquitoes not those of 605 Squadron...

However, I did find these two drawings of what their markings would have looked like during WWII....

Early on the Hawker Hurricane Mk. I.....

Later on the De Havilland Mosquito FBVI...

    Enjoy! :D

Marne I think your mossie in night camo is probably indeed correct .........

thanks guys this is very cool ! by the way my cousin was an ace with 12 kills before being killed in an accident when his Bf 110G-4 had a motor seizure, his two man crew were able to bail out but he stayed in the cockpit probably wounded when the engine exploded, the Bf 110G-4 dropped like a heavy stone. He was II./NJG 5 Gruppenkommandeur at the time of his demise 20/21 December 1943.

    Wow - I missed all the action ! ;)

Interesting thread, guys - and great info from Marne.....

There is a slim but real possibility that the aircraft in question may have been a Mosquito II ; 605 had only just started to replace their IIs with MkVIs in July '43. As yet I've been unable to identify the exact aircraft.

For one of the most famous night-time Mossie images ever, which is in fact Mosquito II DZ716 UP-L at Castle Camps in May 1943, just click on ; -

    I don't know....

If you look at the ratio of Mk. II'S to FBVI's in No. 605 Squadron more than likely it was the FBVI...because by June 1943 the unit was at least 96% or slightly over that percentage, newly integrated with the FBVI's.

But if you're looking at the listing on their website, June '43 is the date the FBVIs started being taken on strength ; they didn't all arrive at once. As an example, FBVI TA383 shown on the list wasn't built until April 1945.... ;)

maybe both in August of 43 ? I'm confused, ok anyone have a pic of a Mossie NF II to display ??

think Stevin gave the names of the crew and I have not checked to see if this confirms my data in the book.

It is safe to say .... yes ? that the 605th sq. was on Intruder duties over the Reich at this time ?

well someone thankfully from another forum just sent me a huge NF Mossie II description, hopeful this fills the bill of what it may have appeared camo wise to the real thing in the 605th nfs ?

Any pictures of your cousin Erich?

It's rumoured in my family that we had a relative in the Luftwaffe from the half of my family that stayed in East Prussia after WWI.
