Greetings from the Great Pacific Northwest, land of rain, salmon, microbrews, Bigfoot, Microsoft, and Nike. I am an avid reader and long-time student of WWII. I came here hoping to find a community of like minded folks that I could learn from. My paternal great-grandfather and grandfather both served in the Hungarian Army on the Eastern Front in WWI and WWII, respectively. My adoptive grandfather, with whom I grew up, was an American WWII veteran (Army). Like many of you I grew up building models. I still collect 1/72 armor and aircraft. I recently purchased a 1/72 LVT-(a)1 and a 1/72 Handley Page Halifax. I just finished reading With The Old Breed. It is great to be alive and it is great to be here. I am looking forward to browsing this 'site and reading myself in during the coming days and months. Cheers!
When I was growing up it was definitely the Air War over Western Europe, but in recent years I am much more interested in Infantry and Armor. I have been collecting WWII rifles since my mid 20s (am 45 now) so it goes hand in glove. I recently bought a U-Boat memoir over Christmas break. My goal is to get a complete well-rounded understanding of the war, including geography, political, etc.
I thought you might be interested in this video about Eugene Sledge the author of "With the Old Breed". Another interesting tidbit is that Sledge's widow thought that Joseph Mazzello did such a good job of portraying her husband in the mini-series "The Pacific" that she gave him the actual pipe he carried all throughout his time in the Pacific. Welcome. Visited my moms sister in Lynnwood north of Seattle back in the 60's. Still remember walking the shoreline in Olympia NP and camping in the shadow of MT Rainier.
Welcome to our community, Dennis. There are many areas to explore ranging from infantry to artillery, ti the Pacific, and others. If you have interest in u-boats I would recommend this. It's a good look at both the German point of view and the American response (or should I say lack of one) Operation Drumbeat by Michael Gannon
Welcome. New guys buy a round at the bar. And check out the sources in my sig. Otto's Hyperwar would keep you busy for a few decades.
Welcome to the forum. Since the topic of Eugene Sledge has come up, I will repost this video(audio only) of Sledge giving a lecture on his experiences.
I hadn't listened to this talk by Sledge before, it's interesting that he addresses two of the issues in three threads, being debated on the forum right now. The decision to drop the bomb and the effects of artillery fire. He's on our side on both these issues.
Welcome Dennis. Be sure to also read Helmet for my Pillow, by Robert Leckie. It is a good companion to With the Old Breed.
