I’m hunting for a Squadron my grandfather was in. He (Benjamin F McNew Sr) was a radioman/Turret gunner on a TBM Avenger from 1944 to 1945. His plane is D11. Can anybody identify the markings. I think I can trace the plane to CVEG-40,CVE-27.

Temujin!! You are the best!!! I have the Hollandia paper. I found it on online after some longtime digging. Apparently my grandfather saw some gruesome fighting, he was shot down along with his best friend. His friend didn’t make it. He never talked about the war. Only the fun times they had on base and flying. My grandmother said he had nightmares for many years after the war. Thank you so much for being able to dig up what you have!! I greatly appreciate it. I’m just trying to understand what you men went through overseas and what he saw.
