An American member of a group I run found this in his father's stuff, and is trying to identify it.
His father was 35th Combat Engineer Battalion, VIII Corps in NW Europe, and his discharge papers mention that a 'button lapel" was issued. Don't know if that's it though.
    Anyone able to help?

Looks like a DUI(Distinctive Unit Insignia) worn on the lapel or later on the epaulets or on the overseas cap. The button lapel would indicate an honorable discharge pin.

I looked through my photos and drawings of DUIs but could not find anything that matched.

With what looks like a Viking ship, I thought it might be a Guard or Reserve unit from the upper Midwest.

I'm not positive but I think the "lapel button issued" may be referring to 'The Ruptured Duck'. Honorable discharge' button.
