Hello! I’m primarily joining this forum to impress my manager from work who told me about this site . All jokes aside though, my name is Chris and I’m 34 years of age and I was born and raised in Texas. I’ve been interested in WWII really since as far back as I can remember. I just finished reading “With the Old Breed” by E.B Sledge and Lately my interests have been around the Pacific Theater. I enjoy reading soldiers accounts from anything involving World War II and am always looking for new reading/film or documentary suggestions. I wholeheartedly believe this was the greatest generation of men and women that America will ever know and that their legacies should not be forgotten. A little miscellaneous info. is that I served in the Usaf from 2012-2018 as a crew chief on AC-130u’s and AC-130J’s. I have 1 deployment to Bagram airfield and I have 2 older brothers one of which was a submariner that sailed Westpac and the other served in the Army as infantry when the Iraq war started, so Thanksgiving’s are pretty fun when we get the chance to come together. OH! and a bucket list item of mine is that I always wanted to fire an MG42 (so hopefully, one day!)
Welcome! My brother was in the USAF for 26 years. I told him that was because he couldn't find his way out.
Welcome aboard...Theres some great reading on the Pacific theatre on this site. One of my bucket list items was firing an M-60...Went to an Air Show here in Darwin and they had one set up for the kids to fire...(this was 1983) - Couldn't believe my luck!
I was shanghai'd to take a turn as gunner when we were heading up to Pattaya Beach. Pirates were picking off boat people fleeing Vietnam. Happy to say I didn't waste the opportunity. The first boat we came across was full of dead males and no females. We were ready from then on.
Welcome to the group. I don't know how far you are from Galveston, Texas but the USS Texas is currently docked there and currently under restoration. It is expected to be open to the public next year.
Welcome Chris. There are plenty of books about the Pacific war. General overviews are given by Toll and Hornfischer. If you're looking for first hand accounts read Sterling Mace's "Battleground Pacific" among others.
Welcome Chris, Always ran outside when I heard the C130's heading over. 182ng ANG. As you will notice as you peruse the threads I'm kinda USAF biased. Three Uncle's were fighter pilots during WW2-Korea-Vietnam, A 'step cousin' (?) Cousins husbands daughter, currently a A10 pilot.
