Or mebbe not. Not a Steve1989 thread but I justed learned about aspic, a Russian gelatin dish that had meat jelly and meat or fish that was served cold. During The Siege of Leningrad, Aspic could be made with leather and wood glue. Tovarisch, skip to 11:13:

I once ate a catfish that had just had a meal of me. He made the mistake of being too intent on leg-o-human to pay attention to potential threats. Raw catfish tastes really good if you haven't eaten in 72+hours. I would have eaten fugu at that point.

I had that one serving of fish between 1964 to that date, 1972, and no more after that. Don't do fish. Like shrimp and lobster, no fish.

Never went to Papa Catfish in Tennessee? Good vittles!

NVM. I went there decades ago when I was taking smokepole make'n classes. The chain has closed.:(

Not even lox (or lochs) 'n bagels? That was my standard fare at gonne-smything skool. I ate at my workbench and filed with the free hand. Instructor asked what I was doing. "Getting iron in my diet!" I generally don't eat fish when I go out b/c most cooks overcook it (hard 'n rubbery is a no-go). However, when I was in England I'd go to aa fish 'n chip shop and dine there. To make it healthy I'd removed the crust and the fish was always tender and moist. Not even fisn 'n chips Opana Pointer?

The Brits invented fish and chips...Some Pommie lads came to Australia to try our fish and chips (fush and Chups if you're kiwi)

Australia has the best fish to choose from...Snapper is my preferred fish
    Snapper

Yeah part of the "trick" is to slightly undercook the fish and let the heat finish the job...
I've had some outstanding fish and chips in the Territory - But we learn to cook fish early...
    Have you tried "Chicken salt"?

FISH ? The only serving of "fish" I've ever spit out was that abomination of what the Japanese call "sushi". Nasty stuff no matter how Highfalutin they want to call it.
I've had Channel catfish, Carp, Swordfish, Lobster, Smelt, Perch , Northern Pike Crappie, Salmon, ,Bass, Pan fish, the list is too long but if it has fins and swims I've probably had it.
what was the topic again ?

Eating aspic made with tanned leather and white glue. Depending on the tanning process (vegetable tanned v. mercuric salt tan or chrome salt tan) it could be dangerous. During the Siege of Stalingrad, human meat may also be snuck in but if you were caught you also caught the bullet.

If you ever read Kyra, by Kyra Petrovskaya, a Soviet woman who was in Leningrad and got to meet Stalin's son when she got out, he had an entire smorgasboard to dine on and he never ate leftovers. That was for the servants, staff and his security force. Star athletes in Leningrad also got special rations with instructions not to share it with anyone including their spouses. Nothing like Soviet equality where the elite get the most and the best and the poor ate wallpaper glue or bread made with some wood flour (sawdust).
