Tariffs are paid by the end purchasers. That's me and my wife. Import Tariffs & Fees Overview and Resources.
Concur. Tariffs cost the consumer. The producer is only hurt when the volume of sales/profit decreases b/c the consumer demand declines thanks to being priced out. Tariffs should only be imposed on products that are sold in competition to domestically manufactured goods. BTW, we lost the auto-industry, electronics (cameras, televeision, stereo) to foreign manufacturers all on our own. Remember Magnavox, Philco, Kodak, and even Radio Shack? Then we outsourced lathes, milling machines, cookware (Corning, cast-iron, pots/pans), linen/clothing/drapes, house cleaning products (vaccum cleaners, carpet cleaners), dishwashers/washingmachines/dryers, power tools etc. To restore our wealth we must manufacture goods for export. This brings wealth into the nation. As individuals e must curtail our spending (ha when that comes to mil hist books and bookcases even if they're homemade), save more for investments and small business start-ups.
From what I've read- Mr.T wants Canada to reduce drugs and illegal immigrants in order to avoid any tariff. Unsure why that would be a big dealio. Unless- there are a lot of Canadian officials/politicians involved. A lot of criminal activity. Hmmm.
Trump saying he and Elon are going into Fort Knox. Invites us to go along . Feb 2025 https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ybzRNbYcD-A
I'll accept your take on that. But I was referencing T.rump's babble. He has a box of dog biscuits and lots of his supporters are addicted to them.
Indeed. Canada is soft. I agree that fentanyl and humans are trafficked through our soft borders. Enforce our borders... Show we have made an effort. Simple. But yet... Doug Ford. Ontario for example. His brother was a crack head who interacted with criminal elements. Drugs and trafficking are big money in Canada. I agree with Donald T.
"The US-Canada border is 5,525 miles (8,891 km) long, making it the longest international border in the world. It stretches across 13 US states and eight Canadian provinces and territories. " Good luck patrolling that. The Naval War College used to call that border the "one-stop shop". Prairie, mountains, seacoast, estuaries, "we got 'em all!" Prohibition Era rum runners would go south from any point they chose and not expect a strong interdiction presence. The only advantage nautical routes had was in sheer volume of liquor. That did make the Kennedys rich.
Thinking- if Canada showed we are trying to enforce the border, crack down on the traffickers and any related. Then Mr. T would soften any tariffs. Hire a bunch of border agents, prosecute dealers. Be transparent. = Avoid tariffs. Simple. Why isn't Canada doing exactly that. I dunno.
Canada is a sovereign nation - No one likes being told what to do with their own country or policies - This type of thing should be done behind closed doors, so the sitting government isn't pressured one way or the other. Trudeau doesn't want to be seen as just complying with the US's demands, even it it benefits from them...The idea must SEEM to come from him...Hope this makes sense.
@OpanaPointer's reference to Prohibition is very relevant. The problem isn't that foreigners are smuggling drugs, it's that Americans are buying them. If people are willing to spend large amounts of money for anything, then other people will supply it. The less thoughtful Americans blame Mexico for our drug crisis; Mexicans would say that their country is being ruined by Americans' endless appetite for drugs. They might also remind us that drug cartels armed with military-grade weapons are due to America's lenient gun laws. Gun smuggling goes north to south; maybe they should demand that we secure our border.
Indeed it goes both ways…But when your talking substances of addiction it gets messy…Remember the British getting the Chinese hooked on Opium, and then controlling the substance to put China under its thumb. I think Mexico and Canada and the US need to create a ‘drug army’, with members from all the countries allowed to ignore borders and clear out the gangs and cartels…They can do this these days using satellites and drones. The US can use its surveillance powers (as Australia does) to intercept all communications and locate and intercept drug runners. Follow them back to their nests…You will have to ferret out all the higher ups on the take…including dirty law enforcement officers. The point is, it can be done…but not without full cooperation.
Opioids were on the same level as whiskey when they first spread out of the Middle East. You could buy morphine (laudanum) at a grocery store. And, of course, nobody ordered anybody to use the stuff. Luckily Western scientists developed a "purified" opiate from morphine. They called it "heroin."
It's largely a matter of peoples' choice. There was a time when practically everything you bought in America was made in America. Then comparable but cheaper foreign items came along and people bought them. There would be a shelf full of American products and a couple of Japanese, and if people bought the Japanese, the store would order more of them. At any point, if a substantial number of Americans were willing to pay more for American-made goods, we'd still have all those industries.
Normal people want more bangs for the buck. I'm no exception except I go out to find second hand American made things than China-mart new stuff. Paid $4 for a copper clad RevereWare pot with lid. Bought an American made Wilton Bullet (machinist) Vise ($300) and an Athol rachet handle vise (originally around $37.50-$42.50 in the '30s when new and I paid $90 around '16) instead of new Chinese ones. Bought a used Wagner Ware cast iron kettle instead of new Chinese made junk. A large part of the problem is the outsourcing of industry under the banner of free trade (thanks Prez Bubba Klington). Originally proposed bt David Rockefeller, it was a way to increase corporate profits, evade OSHA, labor and environmental laws. Trouble is as middle class production jobs flee, so do the support industry (restaurants, mom 'n pops, theatres) that relied on those factory workers. It's why Main Streets are ghost towns today. The promised transition to service industry economy (always a lie) meant everyone would be poor since waiting on tables, flipping burgers, baristas jobs, stocking shelves at Walmart won't (nor shouldn't) pay middle class wages (and hence the "living wage" movement (hello automation - ha!). For a while we saw the looser (Fed) monetary policy that fostered the illusion of wealth. Greenspan Put meant easy credit (remember getting the regularly the credit card offers) and rising home prices (get an equity loan to have the lifestyle you deserve) made people feel rich despite growing homelessness. Today it's rising equity prices and fat 401ks that are used to as part of perception management. The Fed Res picked the winners and the losers and the winners the were homeowners and equity investors (mostly hedge funds). All the time we as a nation grew poorer as wealth flowed from our pockets into foreign coffers. Сredit card debt has maxed out here and the consumer is tapped out. Expect more defaults, car repossessions and foreclosures. When no one buys our debt, it's over. Presently with war looming in Europe wealth is flowing into our nation (it's why gold has been flowing from the LBMA and Swiss refineries to the US) as smart money flees from a potential war zone. We must restore industry to our nation and produce goods for export. We must also reinstate Glass-Steagall which was repealed during Prez Bubba Klington's tenure in office. That's what gave us the the 2008's TARP and QE that hasn't stopped along w/inflation. Remember 1/2 gallon ice cream and sub $1 gallon gas? Be American & Buy American!
People gotta buy local made for local made to be profitable. If production costs cut into profits the producers will look elsewhere. The workers will be dismissed. Then there is less market for the product. The system is inherently unstable.
We need to start by discarding the current debt based fiat currency system. No more central planning when a handful pick the winners and the losers. It's why the rich get richer. Recall the comment abut equities (and no, I'm no socialist/marxist). Cantillon Effect is real and those closer to the spigot take advantage of lower prices before the flood of fresh currency (albeit electronic) is felt via inflation by the lower classes (everyone here even if you're "middle class'). i've seen homelessness increase since the '90s but didn't figure out why everything was going askew until 2004-6.
Turdeau is already on his way out. Similar to biden. The son of Castro has led Canada down the wrong path. Canada simply should reduce illegal immigration AND drugs. Simple. The only reason not - too much money in pockets of corrupt police and government. Our premier is one of the greats. Should put her face on a mountain somewhere.
