I just saw the DVD release of triumph of the will, Leni Riefenstahls 1934 documentary(propaganda) of Hitler. Watching it I could see how he was attractive to a people in the state Germany was back then. A very well done film from a talented director.

Yep, even if made for propaganda purposes it is a "great" film!

It is a GREAT film indeed! And it deserved all the awards it won! More than a propaganda film, it's an artistic one. The photography is just one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, along with the shots and sequences. Leni Riefensthal was a genious and it is perfectly portrayed in this film.

However, millions of people just didn't care about the artistic stuff and just saw the mighty aura of the new régime... [IMG]

Very true Fried. If only her talents had produced a more balanced film. Brilliant nonetheless, especially for the purposes in which it was made.

Certainly, Miss Leni's best film was "Olympia" made in 1936-1938 about the Olympic Games in Berlin. No nazi propaganda there. Only the pure beauty of sports and peaceful international competition is portrayed. The edition, music and photography are MOST supperb, far much better than "Triumph des Willens".

I agree. I have TdW on video - it was on BBC2 yars ago and some of the editing is a bit heavy handed to my mind. Channel 4 broadcast "Olympia" about 15 years ago but to my knowledge, it hasn't been broadcast on terrestrial TV since.
