My mother came across my father's Distinctive Unit Insignia (Unit Crest) for the 144th Field Artillery Regiment California National Guard. Also used for the 980th and 981st FA Bn's from 1943 to 1945. View attachment 21164
How many of these were used for a uniform? When I was in (1981-1987, on the OD green uniform: 1 on the hat, and 2 on the field jacket in garrison. 3 on the dress green uniform.

You are correct as to how the DUIs were worn.
The DUI Pin was optional as many units did not seem to have one. It was not worn in combat but only on the 4-pocket tunic or the "Ike" jacket. A pair was worn on the lapels of the uniform and one could be worn on the overseas cap in place of the entlisted man's disk.

I have the crest pin from my dad but it is not in as good a shape as the one pictured. I do have this small cocktail glass from a set that has the crest and "144th Field Artillery" on it. I should probably toast my dad on Veterans Day using this glass and some of the nasty Calvados apple liqueur we brought back from the 50th anniversary of D-Day in 1994.

Maybe you can have apple juice instead.

No, it probably should be the Calvados because my dad told a story of "liberating" some and drinking too much of it so there is some "history" there. :)
