while my great uncle is still alive it would be nice to make a connection to his service on iwojima .my cousin and i moved him here to okie land from houston because his eyesight is poor. he used to go by jenks powers but his name is a.y. (arwine yates) he pulled a man named john jerry from ardmore okla.out of a burning tank when it hit a mine . they were trying to take the "central?" airfield.
their 1st sergeant sparks was a ww1 vet loved by the co. slept the first night between tank and dozer blade but got hit by direct mortar fire , he also mentioned maj. burns capt. corrigan and lt col collins , for any possible links there. his preferred weapons were .45 pistol and lots of grenades. said he silenced a few pockets of enemies that way. he went in to nagasaki as escort for the" white coat scientists" shortly after the bomb. then spent 9 mos in occupied japan disarming the coastal defences. he was in the 5th marines.
    hoping for a link , thanks .
he was attached to the 5th tank batallion and it was john curry from louisianna he pulled from a tank that blew up from what a.y. said must have been unexploded ordnance because it was somuch bigger concussion than a mine .

I am assuming that he was in the 5th Marine Division. Do you know what regiments, etc he was in?

as of yet no. but we're working on more info. like when he's ready to talk about it.
service #894745 ,also there's a cpl wheeler who's on (honor service valor) forum who is 5th marines but it looks closed , why? there was one other story of how they camouflaged themselves among the dead . he cries to talk though sometimes and of course i don't push.
