I am trying to piece together the individual units of the German Armies in the Western Front. From digging around I know the German 1st, 7th, and 15th Army along with the 5th and 6th Panzer Army were in Central Europe and around. Does anyone know if their are individual units attached with these armies?
You may want to rephrase the question as an Army consists of individual units. For example, German 15th Armee Order of battle (15 May 1944) At the disposal of the 15. Armee 19. Feld-Division (L) 182. Reserve-Division 326. Infanterie-Division 346. Infanterie-Division 84. Infanterie-Division (forming) 85. Infanterie-Division (forming) 331. Infanterie-Division (forming) LXXXIX. Armeekorps 165. Reserve-Division 712. Infanterie-Division 48. Infanterie-Division LXXXII. Armeekorps 18. Feld-Division (L) 47. Infanterie-Division 49. Infanterie-Division LXVII. Armeekorps 344. Infanterie-Division 348. Infanterie-Division LXXXI. Armeekorps 245. Infanterie-Division 17. Feld-Division (L) 711. Infanterie-Division Take a look here : http://www.axishistory.com/index.php?id=30 and more specifically http://www.axishistory.com/index.php?id=1107 .
Thanks I had a difficult time thinking how to phrase the uestion. I am looking for specific units that fought in these areas, but all I know is what armies where their. the sites you linked me to will help. Also how do you read the order of battle. Is the number the units number: For exmaple (346. Infanterie-Division) or something else Thanks
Yes,the number is the division number, but be careful:the opposite,ex. division No 401 is no division,it is only a headquarters in Germany, with as mission to train troops .
you are asking "something impossible",because there was a coming and going from divisions on all fronts .The consequence is that the composition of an army was varying from month to month .Divisions were withdrawn, refitted, replaced by other ones .See the ex.of the 15th army in may 1944,in june, the composition of the 15th army would differ .
The link to the site shows me how much the composition of the armies changed per month. This is at least something that gives me a basis of who was their at the time and I can correlate that to the places and times my grandfather was during the war
