so many heroe's that did! and never questioned or complained, true companions in times of valour that served their country... War Dog Memorial
I saw a very moving documentary about the US Dog Corps in WWII. They were saviours of so many men. Nat ENGLAND
I saw some doc some while ago...good see the keepers fought to keep the dogs alive after the war and most were de-programmed successfully allowing them to go back to there owners. They should did a damn good job serving for there country.
This is one of my favorite topics concerning the war, and wars in which dogs went alongside their master... Ray, there was a specific part of the article that bothered me a bit... Due to a policy that has existed since World War II, and despite the protests of armed forces personnel, the United States military refuses to formally recognize the accomplishments of its canine soldiers, stating that such recognition is "demeaning to servicemen." I haven't served in the military, but would be curious to hear of our veterans or active soldiers thoughts on this?? all the best, Jem
Great pic Luke... I have read Always Faithful: A memoir of the Marine dogs of WWII by William W Putney and War Dogs: A history of loyalty and heroism by Michael G Lemish. Great books!
I'll have to look into those. I don't kknow if I'll be able to handle it though...that show in the Military Channel about did me in. Tough being a dog lover.
I'll second that statement... I've always stated that I would have served in a war dog platoon in WWII, but after reading these stories... and being such a passionate dog lover, I'd have to re-evaluate that statement. There is such a rare connection with my Choc Lab Emma, that I'm already dreading the day of her demise. There is a reason that you and I feel this way Luke... and the it's because their loyalty and love. all the best, Mark
I've been reading through the threads about the War Dogs and wanted to share this. We visited Wildlife Prairie Park outside Peoria last Fall and saw the statue. I'm not sure why but after reading the plaque I had a lump in my throat and didn't/couldn't speak for a few minutes. Getting old and sentimental I guess. Here is a link to the web page showing they didn't just plop it in a path. Wild Life Prairie State Park - Peoria, Illinois Photo Gallery by VDHA at pbase.com
According to the document of the dogs in service in the Pacific only 4 out of 549 ( of those that survived ) were not returned to their owners after retraining back to civil life. Incredible figure , the fact they were able to forget the military past... And yes, must have been awful to the soldiers who lived with the dogs through the war period...
Bill Wynne, who had Smoky in the Pacific during WW2, lives about 15 miles or so from me. If anyone has the chance to read his book, I recommend it.
