While recently in Montpelier, VT, I viewed a model of the USS Montpelier, CL-57, a Cleveland Class light cruiser. The model has fire control equipment above the deck for the 40mm guns.

I was told by a Montpelier veteran—a loader on the 40mm guns—the equipment could also control the 5-inch guns. He showed me a photo of the fire control equipment, which matched that in the model. Does anyone know about this equipment? I am looking for manufacturer, specs, maintenance manuals and training docs.

I already know about the Ford Instruments Range Keeper located in the deepest part of the hull just above the ballast. This device could control the 40mm and 5-inch guns, as well as the main 6-inch batteries. But the above deck equipment is new to me. Thanks.

The system in question is the Mk 63 shown below. In WW 2 it would not have the Mk 37 radar attached but would otherwise be similar. The very similar Mk 57 system can also control the 5"/38 guns in addition to the 3"/50 and 40mm

During World War II, I would have thought she would have had the older Mark 51 FCS, rather than the Mark 63. Possibly even the Mark 49.

That is the above deck portion shown. Again, there is a below decks section like the cut away for the Mk 63 system.
