I was wondering today i received a letter from the us department of state because in april before i was able to get my grandfathers dd214 i sent a request under the freedom of information act to see if they had any additional information on him. Today i finally received a letter and it stated that i needed to direct my request towards the department of army, department of veterans administration, and the national archives and record administration. I was wondering if any of you on the board here has sent such a request in the past to any of the parties and if they were able to have more information rather then a 214, this letter it took 2 months to get so i dont want to wait 3 months just to get a we dont have any information on him type of thing and wait and wonder. Thanks
Check this thread for information about getting records from NARA. It's pretty comprehensive. On the NARA homepage there is a phone number that you can try. It may take a while to get a person, but they can be helpful in guiding you. It can take several months to get information. http://www.ww2f.com/military-servic...esting-copies-military-personnel-records.html Good luck with your search. Keep us informed of your progress. Be patient. It's worth the effort.
thanks for the link, the problem was the nara didnt have my grandpas file because of the fire, but i had then in april sent a letter to someone under the freedom of information act at the department of state and i was told to now try the department of the army, or department of vets administration. was just wondering if anyone has had such luck with either of these two places actually having their relatives file, if its worth sending out and waiting a few months to hear back. Thank you though very much. I got in april his dd-214 from my uncle apparently he had the original ever since my grandpa passed away in 98 so I didnt know he had it til then but i would like more things that would be included in his actual file.
