Alan Rickman, star of Harry Potter, stage and Die Hard fame lost his battle with cancer. One of my favorites. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/01/15/obituaries/alan-rickman-dies-at-69.html?_r=0&referer=http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&rct=j&q=alan%20rickman&ved=0ahUKEwjz9KfDzqnKAhXJ5iYKHbLLDCcQqG8IHTAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2016%2F01%2F15%2Fobituaries%2Falan-rickman-dies-at-69.html&usg=AFQjCNFwO3O6QuyUgmhG1Mz2bglb111IYA&sig2=QvMRtgCcwzCP35gJIfgsnQ
I agree, KJ. One of my favorite actors. Rather odd that he and Bowie should both die of cancer at age 69, and only a few days apart.
R.I.P. Alan! For some reason I remember him best from Die hard 1 although his career has been full of theatre and Harry Potter etc..
I was very impressed with him in Die Hard....first time I ever saw him.....I thought ''who is this''? ..and thought he was a great actor
I first remember seeing him in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood. It would have been quickly forgotten if not for Rickman's outrageous portrayal of the sheriff. He made everything he was in worth watching, if only just to watch him. I was looking forward to enjoying more of his work. I was so sorry to hear this.
First , Clem, good to see you back , always a delight. Alan Rickman co-wrote, directed and starred in a movie in 2012 " A Little Chaos". it received limited circulation and moderate reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a period drama, actually rather a story, set in the time of Louis 14th. . there is little drama, no violence, war, or mayhem, just a character study beautifully filmed.. . The name comes from Kate Winslett, a French gardener , trying to introduce new design concepts to a rather staid court. Many of my male friends said "The English Patient" was a woman's movie and did not care for it. I felt the opposite. In that light many may find this movie the same but I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. . I like stories about human nature, such as "Tender Mercies" for which Robert Duvall won an Oscar for a very understated performance.. Alan Rickman played a wonderful Louis Quartoise. in fine subtle acting as did Kate Winslet. the overly mannered characteristics and behavior of the Courtiers in the Bourbon era are well known, this is a subtle interpretation.....all which led to the Revolution, French that is. Clem a dollar say you will like it !! Gaines
Thank you, Gaines. It is good to be back. You're on. A dollar it is. Although it already has two strong things in its favor, Alan Rickman, and you recommended it.
RIP Alan. On of my favorite actors. I hate to typecast actors, but IMHO, he was one of the quintessential bad guys in film.
Had heard about the film but your mention of it the other day reminded me of it. Got it from Tescos tonight & had a pleasent couple of hours with Mrs & 2 oldest sprogs watching it. We're off to Paris later this year & will visit the sites mentioned as well as already having been to many of the stately homes in England that it was filmed at. Thanks for reminding me of it Gaines. Quite sad too thinking that Alan is no longer with us.
Clem, I am honored but make that 3 things, Kate Winslet plays the main character. Owen that sounds like a great plan. Great places to visit. You can take a train from the Metro to Versailles. If you have time continue to Maintenon to the Chateau there. Unblemished by the Revolution and with a gaint folly to the back, a reconstruction of a Roman aqueduct. Well worth the short trip
I couldn't agree more. This is a bit like telling the punchline without the setup, but... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgv7U3GYlDY
Gaines, three things it is....I do like Winslet. CAC, I liked him in Galaxy Quest, as well. A friend of mine suggested that I watch it, and I resisted, it just did not sound like my kind of movie, and I am not much of a Tim Allen fan. But I relented, and found the movie to be as funny as she said it would be and Rickman was, of course, brilliant as always.
Noticed many of his films playing this week on the telly. A true actor who could convey so much with the cadence of his delivery or even a facial expression. A terrible loss.
I've read that a lot of people put "Die Hard" on their list of must-see Christmas favorites. They say it just ain't Christmas until they see Hans Gruber falling off Nakatomi Plaza. To tell you the truth, I kind of see it that way too now that they describe it that way. I'd like to add "Ice Harvest" to that list of off-beat Christmas movies.
