In researching my father-in-law's service, I have been reading and transcribing letters he wrote home. He was leaving Fort George Meade and shipping out to New York to board a troop ship. This was May 22, 1944. His next letter has return address as: APO 15328 Inft. Co. "O" and was dated May 27, 1944.

There was a gap in the letters from the above to June 28, 1944 where he is "somewhere in the British Islands". He was diagnosed with scarlet fever on the ship going over and was in a hospital. This letter had a return address:
Detachment Patients, 4197 US Army Hospital Plant, APO 506.

We do not know which ship he went to Europe on nor do we know where he was in the hospital.

Does anyone have any idea where these addresses would be located. Thanks for any help.

    All the best.

APO 153 was in Bangor, Northern Ireland - this tracks well with the 28th Infantry Regt which arrived in Belfast on 15 Dec 1943 and left 1 Jul 44, landing in France on 4 July 44. The 28th Infantry was part of the 8th Infantry Division which at the time of its arrival in France consisted of HHQ Co, 8th Infantry Division; HHQ Battery, Division Artillery; HQ Special Troop plus MP Platoon; 8th Counter Intelligence Corps Det; 8th Reconnaissance Troop; 8th Medical Battalion; 8th Quartermaster Company; 8th Signal Company; 12th Engineer Combat Battalion; 13th Infantry Regiment; 28th Infantry Regiment; 28th Field Artillery Battalion; 43rd Field Artillery Battalion; 45th Field Artillery Battalion; 56th Field Artillery Battalion; 121st Infantry Regiment; and 445th AAA Battalion.

APO 506 was in Glasgow, Scotland.

Thanks R Leonard! My father-in-law was headed to a Replacement Depot, but the scarlet fever sidetracked him. He wound up in the 30th Infantry division in August/September, 1944 and fought all the way with Old Hickory.

We have oral history that he was went over on the Queen Elizabeth and if he did he would have gone into Glasgow, Scotland. No one remembers him ever mentioning Scotland but he could have only been there a short time while he was sick.

    Thanks again for the help.

    All the best.
