Does anyone have any information about the current condition of the B-24 "Lady Be Good"? Last I heard (a few years ago) she was sitting in the back of a police compound in Tobruk. The situation in Libya right now is making me wonder about its current shape. Does anyone know if it has survived without much damage? I'm thinking that parts of it may have been stripped off and used by the rebel forces (Tobruk was one of the first cities that became rebel-controlled). Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
Lady Be Good had already been salvaged in the 50's by the Air Force I don't think much was left except for the fusalage and wings by the time they were done. Here is a pretty concise website regarding the wreck: "Lady Be Good" B-24 Bomber, Quartermaster Graves Registration Search and Recovery The Lady Be Good - Ghost Bomber of WWII
I should have been a bit clearer in my original post. The bomber was removed from the desert in the 1990s by the Libyan government, and the remains were shipped to a police or military compound in Tobruk. The wreckage is pretty beat up, but it looks like most of the main components are still there (you can do a google search for "lady be good tobruk" to see some pictures). Apparently a few years ago it was moved to a military airfield 20 miles south of Tobruk. This is the wreckage I am talking about - after the USAF and BP stripped the plane down for spare parts and "souvenirs". Given the situation in Libya at the moment, I am wondering if the wreckage got "cannibalized" for ad-hoc armor or ad-hoc weapons. There was talk about restoring it a few years ago, and from what I can tell this is still possible. The metal was chopped up in a harsh manner, but the pieces still looks structurally sound.
