I have come across a lot of info regarding the naval battle off the island of Samar in the Philippines in October 1944. I would like to know if there was fighting on the island itself at the same time and which US forces were involved.
No, there were no allied troops on Samar island at the time of the naval battle, with perhaps the exception of some downed airmen, and guerrilla fighters. The US ships caught in the surface battle(s) of October were in direct support of the landings on Leyte.
The "mopping up" of the PI went on till June 1945. Except for Luzon, not much large unit fighting took place. Seems it was regimental size sweeps going up against small IJA units. The only info I cold find is from: http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USA/USA-P-Triumph/USA-P-Triumph-23.html Sounds like only small IJA forces existed on the island and they didn't stop the US/Filipino forces at all.
