Belgian Monks Run Out of the World's Best Beer Belgian Monks Run Out of the World's Best Beer Reuters The abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren is home to some 30 monks who lead a life of seclusion, prayer, labor -- and beer-brewing. BRUSSELS (Aug. 12) - Monks at a Belgian abbey have been forced to stop selling their famous beer after it was voted the best in the world and was promptly sold out. The abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in western Belgium is home to some 30 Cistercian and Trappist monks who lead a life of seclusion, prayer, manual labor -- and beer-brewing. A survey of thousands of beer enthusiasts from 65 countries on the RateBeer Web site (www.ratebeer.com) in June rated the Westvleteren 12 beer as the world's best. But the abbey only has a limited brewing capacity, and was not able to cope with the beer's sudden popularity. ''Our shop is closed because all our beer has been sold out,'' said a message on the abbey's answering machine, which it calls the ''beer phone.'' And the abbey has no intention of boosting its capacity to satisfy market demand. ''We are not brewers, we are monks. We brew beer to be able to afford being monks,'' the father abbot said on the abbey's Web site. Monk Mark Bode told De Morgen daily: ''Outsiders don't understand why we are not raising production. But for us life in the abbey comes first, not the brewery.'' Reut12:35 08-11-05
now youre talking! maybe someone should start a thread....whats your favourite alcholic drink and why?
What a tragedy, I always wanted to try their beer. To cheeky monkey, my favorite alcoholic drink is vodka cuz it gets you drunk! And who cares what it tastes like if its cheap and gets you wasted, am I right? Favorite beer (in North America anyways) is a German import called St. Pauli Girl Special Dark. Yum Yum.
http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/yuengling- ... d-tan/887/ Hey 12 bottles @ +/- $9.00 USD its A -OK! this review is about right Pours dark brown, pretty clear, with an off white head that fades quickly. Not a lot on the nose-- mostly some sweet dark malt with a little bitter hops. Nice, bubbly mouthfeel, fairly thin body, almost watery. Mild caramel flavor that wraps up quickly. Incredibly economical, it’s been a long time staple of my fridge. Perfect for kicking back and having a "cold one." its a three on a five scale or 12-14 out of 20 Oldest brewery in the USA (1829)
