What do you guys think is the best book of military history, or even what you favorite?

Mine is Michael Howard's 'The Franco-Prussian War. Also my favorite memoirs is those of Baron De Marbot.

The Price of Glory by Alistair Horne is very good.

Mons and First Ypres by David Lomas are very detailed, interesting and well-researched.

Love Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series' Master & Commander as well. ;)

Difficult to choose one, but probably:

Richard Overy, Why the Allies Won, very clear, good analysis, readable, concise.

Also fond of a lot of stuff by Terraine, Holmes and Keegan.

I keep intending to read more of Michael Howard's work, so far I've only read his War in European History, he has a reputation above almost everyone else.

Phew...there must be hundreds, if not thousands, of 'bests' [IMG]

But I'll chip in a personal favourite, 'serious' book : 'The Bomber Command War Diaries' by Middlebrook/Everitt.

If you have this book, you're holding an incredible amount of research and analysis in your hand...... [IMG]
