The VC awarded to Norman Jackson of 106 Squadron following the raid on Schweinfurt, 26th April 1944, is to be auctioned by Spink in London on April 30th. This follows the recent death of Sgt Jackson's widow. The sale has already caused some controversy with many hoping that the medal will go to the RAF Museum and not disappear into a private collection. Whatever the outcome, more important than the medal is that Jackson's almost incredible feat ( climbing out onto the wing of his Lancaster, fire extinguisher in hand, to attempt to extinguish an engine fire - while thousands of feet up over Germany ) should never be forgotten. The Jackson VC was auctioned this afternoon for £235,250. The previous 'record' price for a VC was £178,250. The AP news report did not say who the successful bidder was. ( = £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££.....)

Reports in todays press that the VC buyer was Lord Ashcroft - previously the secretive businessman Michael Ashcroft - who has the largest private collection of VCs in the world. The collection's whereabouts are never disclosed. ( Incidentally, I posted this topic on A N Other forum & the thread has quickly degenerated into rantings about asylum policy, racism, etc complete with foul language - so it don't just happen here, folks ! )
