Carpenter (ASN: 1680323), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, A.E.F., near Moulin de Charlevaux, France, 5 October 1918. While advancing with his platoon in the Argonne Fewest, Corporal Carpenter located a machine-gun sniper who was directing fire on his squad. Ordering his men to take cover, he drew the sniper's attention to himself by fire from his rifle. His gallant efforts prevented heavy casualties among his squad, but he himself was killed.
