Same here. I might have chosen the Bren also. They used the same ammo as the standard rifles and they both would stop you in your tracks.

I'm not certain if the Degtyaryov DG 28 was the "flat" magazine model called the "record player" or not, if it was it would be my last choice. Slow rate of fire, slow reloading ability, and a weak bipod support system (from my reading). How many of those top load disks can one group carry with ease?

The second choice would be the B.A.R., and for no other reason than the weapon itself was heavy, and the magazine was only 20 per, and bottom loaded.

The first and best of these would have to be the BREN, not too heavy, easy barrel change, easy mag change, and with the top load it allows the "user" to be closer to the ground in the prone position with more ease of reloading. That Czech design was superb. Newer than the Browning, and much less cumbersome than the Soviet.

The Soviet Degtyaryov design was rugged, and reliable (as was the Browning), but the Czech system seems better when we are looking in using the lens of hind-sight. Of course as we are only using that lens, and not the one in "battle", that is the only one we can use.

BAR. That flat Lewis-style magazine is hard to load, fairly easily jammed, makes the gun an awkward load to carry and, just is all around obsolesent.

Bren gun for me. Better suited for the support role IMHO, featuring a larger magazine and an easily changeable barrel etc etc...

The BAR was an excellent weapon (allthough was it called as a LMG ? THE .30 Cal M.1919 being classed as a LMG) but small magazine lets it down, it was issude as one per 12 man squad, but the U.S. marines could employe up to three to a squad. the Degtyaryov was a proper LMG but the large disk magazine was a burdon and when the Russian army was being beaten back by the Germans, production was effected and at one point was down to two per company. but the winner for me is the Bren described by one soldier as 'you had to waggle the thing about to get the bullits to spray round instead of hitting the same area it was so bloody acurate'.

If you are looking for a lmg then the Bren is the clear choice over the BAR. If you want an automatic rifle then the BAR is the best choice. Their roles do overlap quite a bit though. May also depend on what other weapons your unit has and how it's organized.
