    Dear Readers:

Looking for information reguarding the locally authorized shortened Springfield 1903 rifles used by the 158th Infantry AZ (part of the 45th OK NG Division)
while stationed in the Panama Canal Zone in 1941-1942.

The regular 1903 rifle was locally authorized to be shortened to 18in and 4,725 rifles were modified by the Panama Canal Zone Ordnance Depot.

ref: The Springfield 1903 rifles: the ... - William S. Brophy - Google Books pg 82-83.

M1903 Springfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sometime in 1944 they were all turned in and replaced with M-1 Garands or M-1 Carbines, and shipped back to Raritan Arsenal, where they were supposedly all destroyed.

    Any information would be appreciated.
