These were just recently found amongst my grandparents things, and neither my mom, or her siblings have ever seen the pictures before, or know anything about them. The two people in them, are my great grandparents. It appears that my great grandmother was the "sponsor" of a ship/boat launching at South Coast Ship Building in Newport Beach, California. Someone told me that not just "anybody" sponsored the launching of a ship. What could have possibly put her in this position. Is there anyway of identifying the boat? What kind of boat/ship is it? I found this site, but I can't figure out which one it is. South Coast Shipbuilding The text in the corner of the photo says: "C-60316 Christening Sponser Mrs Archie Ostrander (My great grandmother) South Coast Co., Newport Beach Ca Feb. 5, 1943" How can I find out more information? This photo is dated One month and 3 days before my grandfather Enlisted. ~Christopher
From its size and the shape of its bow it would appear to be a PT Boat of of some unknown type (not enough detail to guess the class)
It's interesting the first photo seems to say 1943 while the others say 1945...if 1945 is the case then that puts the boat closest to US Navy Minesweeper YMS 452 278 delivered Feb-13-1945 But maybe I'm seeing things...
I agree. The one next to it in the first photo clearly backs it up. Now just go to the Navy history sites and look for launches, ceremonies for those dates on your photo. Did they work for a ship building company? Or did they buy the most bonds?
