I bought a Walther P38 two days ago and stripped it down today to clean it. When I took off the grips I was surprised to see a name scratched onto the inside of them. I'm fairly confident that the pistol is a vet bringback, and I've seen other examples of captured handguns with veteran's names scratched into the grips in a similar fashion. As a result, I have a feeling that this is the name of the veteran who bought it back.

It's hard to read, but looks like either "M.M McCook" OR "M.M. McCouk" (the initials may also be "W.W.").

Does anyone have any pointers about how to research this man working under the assumption that he was indeed a WWII veteran and served in the Canadian military? I'm reluctant to contact Veteran Affairs with a strange request like this (I doubt they would offer any assistance seeing as how I have no genealogical connection to the man).

    Thanks.
