My long time friend and Great-Uncle, Carl Schuchardt Jr., who served in the US Merchant Marines from 1942 - 1944.

Serving as a seaman, Carl operated a 20mm anti-aircraft cannon on a Liberty Ship which was bringing supplies to the Burma Front, including P-38 Lightning and P-40 Warhawk aircraft.

The cause of death was heart failure. I remember talking to him lots as a kid and him telling me about how they used to use huge orange barrage balloons for target practise in the Indian Ocean. He was a hell of a man and I miss him dearly.

    - RIP, Uncle.

My condolences for your loss. How long ago did he pass on?

He passed in 2004 I believe. I lost another Great Uncle more recently, who was in the Navy during the late days of the war. His name was Emmett, and he was Carl's younger brother. He died in March of this year of heart illnesses. Both were great friends of mine.
