Chelmsford World War II veterans awarded French Legion of Honor

Chelmsford —As daylight poured into the windows of the Chelmsford Center for the Arts last Thursday afternoon, light was cast on two local World War II veterans as they received international recognition with the French Legion of Honor.

Awarding the highest decoration bestowed by France was Consulate General of France in Boston, Fabien Fieschi, who recognized Chelmsford’s Walter R. Hedlund and William T. Poulios for their courageous military efforts, specifically during the liberation of France in World War II.

"It is that freedom that we’re trying to safeguard, not only for this country, but for many countries and that’s why we feel blessed anytime someone is being honored… Because of that love, they put themselves into harm’s way to make sure each and every one of us can enjoy our lives free," said Father Nikolaos Pelekoudas, of the Holy Trinity Hellenic Orthodox Church in Lowell, during the ceremony’s introduction and remarks.
