Hi all, currently there is a WW II relic search under way in Germany. The first firearm - a K98k - was found Friday evening. The progress of the search can be followed using the link below. These internet project was designed for people who are used to think in military categories, who enjoy to find out about WW II by archeological means, and who like to watch the search itself instead just reading about its outcome. If anybody is interested he or she can find the initial posting as well as two updates using http://216.194.97.71/cgi-bin/config.pl?read=2301 The initial posting explains the historical background and gives an overview map. The updates describe actually found relics and conclusions drawn from them. Bye, Thorsten
Thorsten, this is exactly the kind of subject that fascinates me ! Thank you for your postings here, and I shall follow your 'search' with real enthusiasm.....
Thorsten--I completely echo what Martin said and--a job well done. I'm always interested in learning more of where you have been and what you have seen and found.
Hello Martin Bull, hello C.Evans, thank you for your replies. I am glad you found it interesting! If something new happens I will post a notice here. Bye, Thorsten
Thorsten : If I may make a suggestion, unless this is out of your hands and someone else on that forum is doing this..... Can the map be made more clear and the non-useage of so much red... ? Black and or grey is much easier on the eyes and then just a small amount of red for the areas you have explored. My Opa eyes are squinting trying to look at the map as it is so bright... ~E
Hello Erich, I am sorry to hear that the maps are causing inconveniences. The color design of the maps was chosen by their manufacturer. The postings contain two maps showing the same area. The first one can be seen in http://216.194.97.71/cgi-bin/config.pl?read=2301 map #1 is rather coarse since it is an enlarged 1:50000 map. Please ignore that map if it causes problems since there is a better one. The second, much better map (map #2), can be seen in the first update post http://216.194.97.71/cgi-bin/config.pl?read=2342 It makes less use of bright colors. If it was map #1 that caused your problems please ignore it and use map #2 exclusively. With the exception of the path of my reconnaissance walk (not very important; bright blue in map #1) map #2 contains all information of map #1 and shows more details. The only bright red in map #2 are the red dots that show some foxholes. If map #2 is insufficient, too, please let me know and I will try to find a solution. Bye, Thorsten
Thorsten, the second map is excellent. thank you for the link there. have you done any exploration near the airfield/dump at Neubiberg ? I am not sure if there is anything left in that area but after the war it was a very large dump for all Luftwaffe a/c types. ~E
Poor Thorsten - if he's not careful, we will have him running around all over Bavaria with his metal detector....
Hi Erich, hi Martin @Erich As luck would have it I live just a 10 minutes walk from the air field Neubiberg... . If I send you a map and/or aerial pictures of that area would you be willing to mark some spots wherer a search might be promising? Was there anything buried / hidden besides aircraft parts? I can not promise that an actual search will start - it will certainly not start in the near future since I am busy with hill 820 - but every hint you can give will be carefully considered. What does a/c mean? aircraft? @Martin You are absolutely correct, there is so much more space than I can ever search in my whole life . My archive is a 300+ pages word document that contains as many search projects. Of these 300 projects some 15 have priority one. These are tackled. Bye, Thorsten
Thorsten I sent my daughter on a wild chase back 9in the early 1990'sa with some German friends but they got distracted and went into the old part of the city and enjoyed the old churches and square besides having a few cups of Kaffee and enjoying the beautiful scenery. I will try and pin-point the areas I hope, so yes please send a map(s) if you can. I have other contacts that might be of help. Not sure what else was stioned there besides a/c-aircraft but it was a huge stopping off point for surrendered Luftwaffe machines. IV./NJG 2 was staioned there off the road sides-autobahn with there Ju 88G-6 nachtjägers. An interesting fotos can be seen on www.stormbirds.com you will have to look for old relic photos there and my good friend Gordon Permann has placed some examples especially the Me 262 along with Ju 88G-6 and Fw 190's plus other aircraft. I believe that all these a/c were pushed into huge piles at wars end and left to rot for some time before melting down.......sad. There also may have been armored or transport vehicles there as well but I am not sure. ~E
Thank you again Thorsten--your articles are a great learning tool and are not only entertaining but great to learn from. I can hardly wait for your next installment.
Thorsten, I received a response last night from a friend last night that told me the us 357th fighter group was stationed at neubiberg, germany. so with this maybe you can follow up this lead with one of the gents from that fighter group....?
