You may not have had a response as it's La Cambe, not De La Cambe. It is maintained by the German equivalent of the CWGC. Their site is here:- Kriegsgräberstätten | Stadt im Detail and you should be able to contact them for a map of the layout, plus if you have the Name, they will pinpoint it for you, and possibly a photo of the plaque. If you can't manage the German, then try this:- German cemetery of La Cambe (Calvados) which will give you some idea of its layout and location. Hope that helped, but Google may give more for you to review.
Details here: La Cambe German Cemetery, Normandy His grave is across to the right as you enter the cemetery. Since I took those photos it has become something of a 'shrine' and you won't fail to find it.
Thanks for that. Looking here in which grid do you reckon Whittman's memorial lies? Even looking at Google Earth you can see one well worn track across the grass and a few sites as dark blobs probably indicating wreaths etc. Thanks.
If my memory serves me right, Michael Wittman's grave is situated in grid reference D1. As Sommecourt has mentioned, you can't miss it as it is the one with the most flowers etc placed upon it.
Many thanks. GPS loaded! I'm driving this route - Amiens - Where Wittmann died and La Cambe. Is there anything you recommend visiting en route?
Have you seen the episode in "Battlefield Mysteries" TV series about his death and the finding of his remains? It shows his burial place in the programme.
hello 8002reverse, last year i spent a few hours walking in those fields where Wittmann and his men were killed - not much to see to be honest, i found a few rusty bits and peices but nothing special. further down the road is the Canadian War Cemetery Cintheaux which is certainly worth a look - very beautiful indeed , you can see it on google maps when you zoom in. enjoy your drive
The route between Caen and La Cambe (the N13) is very uneventful as it is modern dual carriageway road all the way. As Andypants has mentioned, Wittmans place of death is just off the N158 and so too is Hill 112, which is another interesting place to visit. There is also a Polish cemetery further along the N158 at Grainville-Langannerie. Have you also thought about carrying on along the N158 to visiting Falaise and even further inland to the Gap region?...And then to...I could go on and on !!! Enjoy your trip.
