The last anyone heard of the Cyclops as it steamed in a voyage that began in Bahia, Brazil, on Feb. 22, 1918, en route to Baltimore with 10,000 tons of manganese ore in its bunkers, was in a telegram to the West Indian Steamship Co. in New York City. Disappearance of USS Cyclops remains one of the sea's most enduring mysteries - baltimoresun.com
Thanks Sniper! Argueably the sea's greatest remaining mystery. If Ballard wants to go find something this is definitly it. A small error in the report (i'm shocked!) CYCLOPS was seen by a British Patrol boat after it left Barbados. The patrol boat informed CYCLOPS she has off her assigned course. This is important as Worley was alleged to be a terrible navigator and had allegedly overshot Bahia on both legs of CYCLOPS trip to Rio. That being the case CYCLOPS could be way off its supposed position. Sadly even if found so much time has passed that there may not be enough left to figure out why she sank in the first place.
IIRC manganese ore and steel in seawater would oxidise the steel in close proximity relatively quickly, so there is unlikely to be much left at all.
