I presume you got that from a document. Could you post it in this thread so we can see the context? That might help in deciphering its meaning.

If my research is correct, PBS stands for Peninsular Base Section. It appears that "Peninsular Base Section" was a major supply unit based in Italy. Among others things it served as a replacement depot (there's a google news article about a few hundred replacements going through the PBS in 1944) and refurnished rifles (several links come up about 'PBS' marked rifles that saw service in Italy).

Read through the results here: Google

Is there anything else in the document that hints at where he was stationed? If there is anything about him being in the MTO? If so, its a safe bet that this was his unit.

If your father was in the United States Armed Forces, then PBS is the abbreviation for "Peninsular Base Section" which was HQ'd in Naples, Italy - Activated on November 1, 1943, and was part of the Quartermaster Corps of the US Army.

You can see their Administrative Order as of January 31, 1945, as well as several memos & blank forms here: http://cgsc.cdmhost.com/utils/getfile/collection/p4013coll8/id/2381/filename/2370.pdf
