I realise that most articles are current, but this is one from 1950 and is hopefully of interest. The article was printed in the John O'Groat Journal (a newspaper for Wick, Scotland), in an issue dated 17th February 1950. The full article reads... The Late F./Sergt. Neil Dallas, RAF, Wick The death occurred recently in hospital in Sheffield of Flight-Sgt. Neil Dallas, RAF, youngest son of Mr William Dallas and of the late Mrs Dallas, 2 Lower Dunbar Street, Wick. He was 38 years of age. Flight-Sergt. Dallas was probably the longest serving Caithnessian in the Royal Air Force, having completed 23 years service. He joined as a laddie of 15 years on leaving the High School at Wick, and went to Singapore in 1934. Returning to this country he was stationed in Thorney Island and from there went to Malta after the outbreak of war. He survived the blitz on the Mediterranean island and was transferred to the Middle East. In late years he was stationed in Gosport, but some time ago fell victim to an illness and died in hospital. Flight-Sergt. Dallas was a bright personality with a ready smile. He was reserved but had many good qualities, not the least of which was character. Frequently he revisited his home town and renewed acquaintanceships, and his passing will occasion much regret among all who knew him. The funeral took place in Sheffield with full military honours. Four of his brothers travelled south to attend. Flight-Sergt. Dallas is survived by a wife and son (resident in Sheffield), and to them and his father and brothers much sympathy has been expressed.
Hello all, I'm interested in discovering more details about Neil Dallas' service in the RAF. Any pointers as to sources for details on Malta would be greatfully received, and also anything on Thorney Island - eg. websites, books etc. Thank you, Steven
