George P. Shaffer (1916 - 2008) PIONEER,OHIO - George P. Shaffer, 92 of Pioneer and formerly of Archbold died early Thursday morning at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold, Ohio. George was born January 8, 1916 in Huntington, Indiana to George P. Shaffer Sr. and Mary Jane Albertsmeyer. On January 8, 1947 George married his wife Mildred M. Rawles, making this their 61st year of marriage. George served his country with the US Army in WWII serving with the S.H.A.E.F. under General Eisenhower. George retired at the age of 72 after being with employed at Dinner Bell Foods in Defiance as Head of Security for the last 13 years. Prior to that he worked at Campbell Soup Company of Napoleon for 11 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Montpelier, was in the Pioneer Lions Club, American Legion Post No. 311 of Archbold, a charter member of the VFW Post No. 8628 of Pioneer and a member of the Bryan Moose No. 1064. At one time George was the president of the Campbell Soup retirees club for five years. In addition to his wife Mildred, a resident of Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home, he is also survived by one son Francis (Rose) Shaffer of Adrian, Mich.; four daughters Elizabeth (Thomas) Belenchia of Spartanburg, S.C., Mary Jane (Al) Compton of Owosso, Mich., Jeri Ann (Charles) Brown of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Susan Marie (Robert) Gilbert of Delta, Ohio; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding George in death are his parents and three sisters: Geraldine Fox, Delilah Loy, and Juanita Shaffer. Visitation hours will be on Monday, October 27, at the Chapel in Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold from 2-8 p.m. A LionÕs Club service will be held at 4 p.m. A Memorial Service will be at the Chapel in Fairlawn Haven on Tuesday, October 28, at 2 p.m. with Father Gary Ferguson and Pastor Charles Gautsche to officiate. A private interment will be at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer with graveside military rites by the Pioneer Veterans. Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wms. Co. Veterans Memorial Building.
