    Hello,

My name is Jason. I am currently a SSG stationed here at Fort Campbell, KY with the 1-502 Infantry. I am originally from Sheboygan Falls, WI. I have been stationed here before with B Co 3-327 INF from Feb 2000 - Apr 2002. From there I re-enlisted to head to Germany where I was assigned with A Co 1-4 INF as an OPFOR scout, team leader, and squad leader from Apr 2002- Oct 2005. Once completed with my Germany tour I was assigned to 1-505 PIR at Fort Bragg, NC from Dec 2005- Aug 2008. I was then selected to become a Drill Sergeant and was assigned to A co 2-60 INF at Fort Jackson, SC from Sep 2008- Oct 2010. After my tour as a Drill Sergeant I then was assigned to 1-502 INF here again at Fort Campbell. I am now a combatives instructor for my brigade. I have been deployed three times: two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. I am on here to try and follow up on my grandfather who was with the 506th PIR during WWII. Hopefully, I can get some answers and find out some information on him. Hope to hear from you all.

Hi Jason. Glad you decided to join us. What do you already know about your grandfather? We'll try not to duplicate what you you already have. If you have stuff, feel free to post it and we'll try to fill in the blanks.

Welcome to the Forum, Jason. My son went through Basic at Ft. Jackson in early 2008. I went there myself for the graduation ceremony. Lovely place, at least compared to Ft. Sill. ;) He also spend a year in Iraq in 2009-10.

Thank you very much for your service. We'll do what we can to help with your search.

Welcome Jason. A small world. I was in Sheboygan Falls just three days ago (this past Saturday) working with the WI Athletic Commission on an MMA show.

I think you'll find some helpful members here with respect to your search.

He came into the service 23 May, 1944. He finished school early so that he can come in, since the military was looking for German translators. From what I know and also information from my aunt, he was a PFC, infantryman with E co 506th Inf. I don't know what battalion, since I am sure he was used a lot for translations. His service number : 36 981 017. His full name is Robert Valentine Neumann. He was discharged from the service 4 June, 1946. Hope this helps. Thanks

    Jason

There's a thread (actually several I beleive) on the forum that tell how to get is official records (as long as they still exist). You might want to check here:
Military Service Record & Genealogical Research

    Welcome aboard by the way.

LWD, yes I am in the process of doing that with the SF 180. With this form I hope to gain more knowledge, but was hoping that maybe someone came across something. I also have my aunt looking into it as well and can request awards, medals and what not since she is the daughter. I also went to the museum on post here at fort campbell and they were unable to find him through the WWII books.

It's really not my forte but some of the people here are really good at tracking things like this down. Good luck on this.

Oh once you get the forms (if his weren't among those that got burned) some of the details may be useful in gaining a lot more info. Since you are in the service you'll have a leg up on most of us who find the personel records rather cryptic.

Yes, I found his grave site on the website that is in manitowac, wi. I have my doubts he was with the 506th in Easy Co, since today I went to the museum here at Fort Campbell and they couldn't find his name in the records they have kept. BUT with the certification my aunt found it has the request form for his military grave stone. She is most likely going to request his records and medals for free, since she is his daughter. I am still going to request them as well and also check into the 82nd, since on his class a uniform that I found had the 82nd patch on left shoulder and 101st on his right. Some of his medals are missing, so hopefully with getting some of those documents will fill in the missing spaces. Thanks again for the help

I checked the Fold3 website and found a "Robert V. Neumann" but this Mr. Neumann was born in 1925 in Cook County,Illinois? Nothing much else there. Good luck.

A lot of troopers from the 101st were transferred to the 82nd about the time of Operation MARKET GARDEN after seeing combat with the One-Oh-One. If you can get a copy of his DD214 it should make it clear. Good luck and Charlie Mike.

Looking at his induction date I would think he did not go overseas until early in 1945 which would be a time when there were probably many replacement troops coming and going. With his ability to speak German I'd lean toward checking any occupational troop duties and related branches. Big guess here but possibly TD'd to the 82nd for Intelligence gathering of capture reports?
