Hello all! I'm just checking in from New Orleans, Louisiana. I joined the forum mainly to research information on my Dad's unit in WWII. My father was a 1st lieutenant with the 321st Regiment of the 81st Infantry Division (Wildcats!), US Army. Dad died in 1999, and didn't talk much about his service. Fortunately, there is a good bit of information about the 81st Division available. I have a few of Dad's papers, but there are some gaps I'd like to fill. I have been able to trace the Division's movements from their deployment to Hawaii and Guadalcanal and on to Anguar and Peleliu. I also have a picture of the officers in the Regiment, and of the Regiment on parade at Camp San Luis Obispo, California. Dad was wounded on Peleliu and evacuated back to the U.S. late in October, 1944. I know he was in the Brooke Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas for a while, and was then discharged from active duty at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. What I do not know is what Company he was in, or what his duties were. I also don't know what the extent of his injuries were. He never talked about what happened on Peleliu. I assume he was on Anguar before Peleliu, but I'm not sure. He had flashbacks and nightmares his entire life, but would not seek help for them. My father's name was Lt. Harvey Byrd, from Bogalusa, Louisiana. I know that most of this incredible generation has passed away, but if anyone on the forum has information on the 81st, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Welcome your reason for signing on is the same as many others and I hope you find what you are looking for. Several years down the line I am still filling in the small gaps I have left in my Dad's story.
Welcome to the Forum, southerndruid. It would be helpful to know more about what types of documents you have. If you can post copies, that would be very helpful. Let us know if you have any trouble doing so.
