The British used them to carry 4x 500 lb bombs each for the oil refinery raids 1945 in Indonesia. They used Avengers in raids in quantities of about 48, plus escorting Corsairs, and fighter sweep Hellcats, plus a squadron of Fireflies as strike leader with rockets, for a total of about 100 planes. Does anyone know what loads were used by the American Avengers? I have only seen film of them dropping torpedoes. Thanks!
Churchill: The USN used the Avenger as torpedo-plane, bomber, ground-attack and anti-sub aircraft. As such, it was able to carry one torpedo, (4) 500lb GP bombs, or depth-charges and bombs (two of each) in the anti-sub role. Later in the war, it was also equipped with underwing unguided rockets in addition to the bomb load-out for ground-attack. SturmTiger: What you need to do is find an Accurate Miniatures 1/48 scale Grumman Avenger. It's an incredible kit and was originally released in about four different variants. The "George Bush" Avenger is out there right now... but not sure about some of the other variants by Accurate Miniatures. It's a GEM I'm telling you... I modeled mine with the flaps dropped. Tim
This year it was reissued under Italeri label (B-25 and Il-2 as well). Had on in my hands so it is positivly AC, but sold it to one of my fellow club members. http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=IT2644
