Not sure. The article didn't say. I guess maybe it sank in a bog that is now a field or possibly a lake that had been drained.
Halifaxes that crashed tended to break up into componant parts (ie: chunks of fuselage, etc) rather than remain intact but crumpled.
No. 148 squadron (Special Duties) was very active over Slovenia as well. They were droping suplies to the partisans. It is interestin that they operated interesting mix of Merlim powered Halifaxes of all marks and versions. What is interesting is that over Slovenia they also operated during daylight and quite few photos were taken of their planes (great low level shots). Muzej Novejše zgodovine (Museum of conteporary past) in Ljubljana has most of the negatives (so no posting of them on the net ).
Forgive my ignorance of Slovenia but wasn't it part of the Yugoslavia during WWII? Unfortinutely the article is not there anymore so I couldn't read it.
I believe there were some Poles that flew in that Special Duties squadron. I think they also used Dakotas.
I can confirm that over Slovenia USAAF, RAF, SAAF, VVS Squadrons with C-47's from Italy were suplying partisans. I'm not shure about units. Pic's of their planes are in the archive of contemporary history in Ljubljana. friend checked part of their archive and their planes were photographed on partisan landing strips. Also pic's of Halifaxes (mix of all versions) and Wellingtons in low level flight droping supplies are qiute common in the archive. BTW VVS unit flying from Italy was grupa Sokolov. It consisted of unit of C-47's (lend -lease) and one squadron of Yak-9DD fighters for escort purposes.
Actually I am positive that the Poles were in that squadron because I believe that is the only squadron that was supporting partisens because there is one account that they landed a plane in Poland while supplying partisans and the aircrew started digging dirt into bags which were sent all the way to England to sprinkle on Polish graves.
