Helen Thomas, gone. I am putting this in the "Stump" for the simple reason that the old gal was the Whitehouse reporter/questioner of note for soooooo long. I was shocked, or rather taken aback a few days ago when she made that tasteless comment on the Jews should get out of Palestine and go back to Germany and Poland where they belong. Of course when you are as ancient as she has become (89?) sometimes I think grumpy and confrontational can just become the norm. I alway liked and admired the woman until about ten years ago. I think that was when she stopped being a paid columnist/reporter and became an Op-Ed contributer only. I wondered what she was still doing in "the front row" since she wasn't a reporter anymore. Must have just been inertia or something. The "Helen Thomas Memorial Chair" or something. For years I got a kick out of her "needling" any President she questioned, regardless of party. She didn't pull her punches, but that was when she was asking questions about things even I wanted answers to. I don't recall her making any "opinion statements" without tying them to the questions in the past. This was just a crochety and grumpy outburst. It is time for her to move on. She doesn't need the job, and no longer deserves it.
That's not mean, that is the truth. Like I said, I think she just got old and grumpy and didn't really think about what she said very much anymore. She had made a living out of shocking and pissing people off, and just didn't care anymore. Here is a good column on the subject. Hi Clint, thanks and thanks for the link. I have to wait till tomorrow when im at the lib, before I can access it ;-)) Does anyone remember that San Antonio Reporter who stood up to Bush Sr, and refused to sit down and shut up when he ordered the reporter to do so? I wonder if this man is still in the news reporting business? ;-)) Sorry for going way of kilter w/ the above ;-)) but its something I have wondered about off and on through the years.
The real issue with Helen Thomas was that she wasn't very good in these past decades and she became somewhat of a joke. Still, it's too bad that she gave feminism a bad rap going out like that. Her credibility zero.
Not that imm intentionally trying to make fun of her but-that piece they showed where she said those things-Lord above, she could easily protray the Wicked Witch of the West and without makeup.
What does it say about a person, 89, who obviously was financially comfortable and still hung on despite all the criticism about her gaffes over the years. OCD anyone?
Heh heh, now for a new carreer in movies perhaps? Why not? everyone else seems to want to be in movies. Im NOT included in that last statement though. There arent many actors still living and who are active in movie making-that i'd want to appear on screen with. Besides, I don't think many would want me on the big screen anyway
Carl, when I saw the old gal give that goofy interview, the Wizard of Oz witch was the first thought I had as well. That and the part of League of Their Own when Hanks gets awaken out of a drunken stupor by the girls chaparrone and he gives her a great big kiss as he is waking up. And he sees who he has kissed, his eyes get huge, and he starts washing his mouth out with whiskey, and then turns to her and says; "loved you in the Wizard of Oz by the way."!
Ha ha, funny you should mention that because it was a toss-up between the WWotW and Endora-Samantha Stevens mother. I didnt want to include Aunt Clara-as I always liked Samanthas Aunt.
Oh God, I sure hope she doesnt try talk radio--too many idiots on it from both sides of the isle. I will admit that when I can pick their shows up-depending on where im living at the time? I like Charlie over-night, Michael Reagan and Michael Medved (sometimes)
She doesn't need a job at 89, she needs to retire and get her crotchety old lady mouth out of DC. There is one nation who is worried about her not being contained in DC, that is for sure.
