I'm Leonard, 15, and live in the US. I'm German, and at the same time a World War 2 fan. *Sigh* a lot of people call me a Nazi because of it, but trust me I'm just a fan. My Grandfather fought in North Africa under the command of Erwin Rommel, until he was eventually captured by the British, who he said treated him quite well! Sadly, my grandfather passed away a few years ago, so I can't ask him much about his experiences anymore, however, my father(his son) said he didn't like talking about the war much. My great grandfather on my mother's side, worked at a concentration camp. He told us how he was one of the soldiers who was burying dead Jews. He said some of them were still moving, and him and his friends would have been shot if they would have tried to help them. Those memories haunted him until death. At my Grandmother's house (built in world war 2) we found an old German gas mask from (most likely) the people that built the house. I'll post pictures in summer! We also have a mug with a swastika on the bottom from the war, I'll share it too. Also, we are going to go around in the attic of my other grandmother's house and see if we can find something. A lot of war survivors lived in that house so we have a good chance. As you may have guessed about me by now, I'm a fan of relics. Anyway, if anyone needs any translation help I'm more than happy to help! And PLEASE let's not talk about what my ancestors may have done to your ancestors or maybe even you, as it is not my fault, and you may call my a liar, but none of them said they enjoyed the war.
Welcome to the forums Leonard, fantastic family history and thanks for sharing them with us. Looking forward to your relics pictures and your contributions.
hi fellow newbie just seen your post. Was very sorry to see you have problems people calling you a Nazi-don't worry about it - it's usually ignorant people who haven't even been to Germany. My father was in Hamburg at the end of the war and despite orders that the British should not mix with Germans that didn't last long and the British soldiers then found the Germans were not that much different to them. Yes of course there were many Nazis and they did terrible things but you can't blame the whole German nation for that. When I was 17 I joined the British forces as a paratrooper and also spent much time in Germany and I found the Germans to be mostly quite nice people. Anyway you know the old saying the victors re-write history, the British and Americans although not on the same scale, also committed some atrocities, but they are brushed out of history now-and guess who invented concentration camps? Yes the British during the Boer war-so ignore the silly buggers who call you a Nazi!
Hi, In which camp? If i'm right, they didnt had to bury them, but the jews had to do it? Still, they are murderes. And why an SS avatar? No wonder they call you a Nazi.
