I'm looking for some help with my grandads who served in WWII. The 70th anniversary of D-Day has my interest up as both went in. One was a paratrooper in the 82nd (William Max Mathews) and one was a glider pilot for the 325th (Dumas Pitt). That's about all I know. I do have Dumas' army serial #. I'm just looking for all the info I can attain about them and any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to the forum Patrick, Check out the links here : http://www.ww2f.com/forum/34-military-service-records-genealogical-research/ Post any information you have and I'm sure there will be many who can get you started.
Thread relocated. Welcome Patrick. Whether you have their ASN or not, you can try looking them up in the WWII Army Enlistment database. I found a listing for Dumas C. Pitt, which I presume is for your granddad. If he served with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, there is a fair amount of info available. There are two books on the 325th, Let's Go! and Glide to Glory and neither is particularly cheap. You may want to see if you library can find one or both. We'll need a bit more info on your other granddad, since William Matthews is not an uncommon name.
Thanks for the start! Yes, Dumas C. Pitt was my grandad. The only other info I have on William Mathews right off hand is his birth and death dates. Born 2-6-21, died 10-8-50. Thanks again guys!
Welcome, Just to let you know Glider Pilots were US Army Forces, probably assigned to Troop Carrier Wings(?). Though I have heard of infantry soldiers being asked to co-pilot a glider. Knowing whether he was with the Glider Infantry or the Troop Carriers can help your search. Good Luck EDIT: I meant US Army Air Force
