I assume these are Navy ribbons. It's very difficult to ID them without the color. If you can tell us what the colors are, it would make it easier. You can check this site to see if you can make out what they are. U.S. Navy Ribbons and Awards
Sorry but the photo is black and white. I am also woundering about the stars, some dark and some light. And what appears to be a leaf on the top ribbon.
Here's what I can tell you about the stars, etc. on the ribbons. The darker ones are bronze stars and are awarded for participating in various campaigns in a particular theater (either the Pacific or the European). In each theater certain battles were identified as significant enough to be worthy of an award. The lighter ones are silver awards and signify the equivalent of 5 bronze awards. I think the item on the top ribbon is an arrowhead. It signifies amphibious assault, a combat parachute drop, a helicopter assault landing, or a combat glider attack. Or, it could be an oak leaf cluster, which would indicate multiple awards of the same ribbon. It could be gold, silver or bronze. I just can't get a clear enough view of the ribbons themselves in order to identify them.
I believe the bottom row is from left to right: Left: American Defense Service Medal Middle: American Campaign Medal Right: Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal As for the top ribbon, I'm not sure, can't really find a ribbon that fits the color pattern. Possibly the Legion of Merit, it was first awarded in 1942 As for the "stars" on the ADSM, they are inked in, not really sure if they are there or not on the ACM, possibly one bronze star denoting 2nd award, it also looks inked in on the APCM, there is definitely one bronze star for 2nd award located on the center of the ribbon, the other 3 look like they are inked in. but like stated before by LRusso216, without color, you can't be positive. Hope it helps :+)
