    Or should it be m'aider?
    Anyway, can any of our French members give me a sensible English translation of Papa, t'es plus dans le coup? I think I know what it's supposed to mean in English, but........
    It's cos I just found a clip of Ludivine Sagnier singing it as a trailer for Eight Women, and now I'm even more in love with her....

    YouTube - Ludivine Sagnier - Papa T'es Plus Dans Le Coup

    Btw, Ludivine is the blonde 'kid' in the movie clip (she's 28!), and the blonde bombshell singing along to herself in the bathroom mirror.
    And they say French cinema is dead??

    The original lyrics in French:
    Papa, t'es plus dans le coup - Sheila - Paroles
    Papa, t'es plus dans le coup

    by Sheila

    {Refrain}: Papa, papa, papa, t'es plus dans le coup, papa. {x2}1-Tu m'avais dit, dès ma plus tendre enfance "Bien mal acquis ne profite jamais."En grandissant, au fil de l'existence, j'ai vu que ce n'était pas toujours vrai.{au Refrain}2-Tu m'avais dit "Mon enfant, sur la terre, aide tes frères, tu seras récompensée."Moi, j'ai prêté ta voiture à Jean-Pierre, il me l'a ramené en pièces détachées.{au Refrain}3-Tu devrais, ma parole, retourner bien vite à l'école, réviser ton jugement.Crois-moi, ce serait plus prudent.Tu m'avais dit, pour me mettre en confiance, que le travail conserve la santé.J'ai travaillé, chaque jour, sans défaillance, depuis, je suis fatiguée, alignée.{au Refrain}4-Tu m'avais dit "Ce garçon est volage. Fais attention, il va te faire souffrir."Pourtant, près de lui, je vis dans un nuage, et le bonheur danse sur mon sourire.{au Refrain}T'es plus dans le coup, papa. T'es plus dans le coup, papa.T'es plus du tout dans le coup, papa.

    Tranlated by Google;

    Dad, be to you more in the blow
    by Sheila
    {Refrain}: Dad, dad, dad, be to you more in the blow, dad. {x2}

    1 you had said to me, as of my more tender childhood “Well badly acquired never profits.”
    While growing, with the wire of the existence, I saw that it was not always true.

    {with the Refrain}

    2 you had told me “My child, on the ground, helps your brothers, you will be rewarded.”
    Me, I lent your car to Jean-Pierre, it brought back it for me in spare parts.

    {with the Refrain}

    3 you would have, my word, to well quickly turn over to the school, to revise your judgement.
    Believe, it would be more careful to me.

    You had said to me, to put itself in confidence, that work preserves health.
    I worked, each day, without failure, since, I am tired, aligned.

    {with the Refrain}

    4 you had told me “This boy is unsteady. Pay attention, it will make you suffer.”
    However, close to him, I live in a cloud, and happiness dances on my smile.

    {with the Refrain}

    Be to you more in the blow, dad. Be to you more in the blow, dad.
    Be to you any more in the blow, dad.

    Cheers Jan; I had the same problem when I tried to translate it into English on Babelfish!

    Not being, or ever likely to be a Polyglot (like a mate of mine that speaks 13 Eastern European languages fluently and another dozen or so worldwide ones 'with an accent'... the swine) or even any of the bods on here for whom English is not their mother tongue (I'm always impressed), I really look forward to the day they sort out automatic internet translation to a level of true quality.

    I appreciate the obstacles but I feel certain they'll overcome them. It'll be nice to one day chat with people from all over and really understand what they mean, so many attempted discussions, with Russians in particular, seem to have degenerated into shouting matches largely down to apparently language based misunderstandings.
    Just have a feeling it'll be one of the great turning points in the internet if they ever sort it out.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

    I tried to translate the song and it was so off, I really had no idea what she was singing about.

    Everyonce in while I get lucky with a translation, usually only a word or two or short phrase.

    SD, as has been experienced at length 'elsewhere', one of the greatest language challenges, that I suspect technology will never overcome, has to be the Alabamian/English translation. :D

    I can't get that damn song out of my head now!!!!!!!!!!! A checkout girl, earlier, kept giving me dirty looks - I assume because I kept muttering papa papa papa papa :dance3:

    And some of Sheila's other songs seem like fun too (like her French take on Do Wah Diddy Vous les copains)

    I know the feeling, Amrit! Could be worse, you could be singing it in French.
    Mind you, Sheila's singing is an improvement on Jonny Halliday's!

    I will stop the torture guys. "dans la coup" means being up to date. In other words she says her dad is oldfashioned.

    If only! Wish my French went further than ordering beers and cigarettes. I would love to be able to sweet talk this particular minx (the song always sends shivers down me - though I only have the faintest idea what she's singing):

    YouTube - Carla Bruni - Quelqu'un m'a dit

    aarrgghhh - why did you lower the tone by mentioning HIM?
