    CAMDEN, Mich. — Herbert L. Preston, 83, of Camden, Mich., died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at M99 and Industrial Park Drive, Jonesville, Mich.

    He was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Thelma, Ky., to Victoria (Lynch) and Solomon Preston. He was married to Betty L. Suntken at Montpelier on June 18, 1955, and she survives.

    Herb served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 2nd Class in World War II. He retired from the former Vaaco Products in Jonesville, Mich., in 1989 after 22 years of service as a set-up man. Prior to working at Vaaco Products, he helped establish the Ohio Turnpike from the Indiana line to Toledo.

    After retirement Herb did various jobs for Woodbridge Township. He was a member of New Hope United Brethren Church in Camden since 1972 and a member of The Promise Keepers.


    In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Jo Ann (and husband, Jerry) Ewbank of Jackson, Mich., and Tena (Master Sgt. Joseph) Waters of Rosemount, Minn.; a son, William L. Preston of Clarklake, Mich.; a sister, Leonia Dawson of Ottowa, Ohio; foster daughter Janet (Francis) Baumia of Monroe, Mich.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.

    Visitation for Herbert L. Preston is Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier from 2-8 p.m.

    Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope United Brethren Church, Camden, with Pastor Donnie Gentry officiating. Interment will be in Frontier Cemetery, Frontier, Mich. Memorials may be made to the church.
