It looks like if it was tied on something like a mast and was ripped off by the corner

I will appreciate help for dating it and to know exactly what it was used for

    thanks

It's a copy of the Japanese battle ensign.

    A flag isn't a handkerchief.

As for use, anything is possible.

The size is quite small like a handkerchief, I know the difference, I edited the post and wrote flag/handkerchief.

It is a personal flag, with many possible uses. I just was asking for more information.

I am very respectful with flags one of my precious things is a flag that belonged to my father.

I do not like the photos of the captured hinomaru I used to see on the internet.

Is not the place here to explain who I am or what I have done to conserve the history. But for sure I respect the history. Just say that I have been practicing judo for more than 30 years so I know the Bushido. Do not think I said handkerchief as a not respectful word, I said that because of his small size. Also perhaps my English is not very good.

I think this forum is not for me.
    Thanks

We have a getting to know you section if you want to share your experiences. But we do have to remember that some people can be judgmental based on very little information.

I've seen pictures of japanese soldiers with small flags tied to their rifles, this could easily be something like that

While googling for a relevant pictures I came across this discussion which may help
