    B-17 plant due for demolition.

I understand the need for "bigger and better" and all, but sort of sad to see the original B-17, and other bomber line plant going away.

    That is sad to hear.

My late uncle worked for Boeing for over twenty years and he took me for a tour of the newer factory when I was a little tot. I can still remember the awe I had seeing that huge place building those huge airliners.

I just merged them, no need to worry about double posts really. Interesting but sad story as you mentioned. Time does bring about the need to modernize. Think of what a step it was from Plant #1 where they made wood and fabric biplanes to #2 where they assembled all metal monoplanes in an assembly line!

See, If they had just left the camouflage on they wouldn't have been able to find it to tear it down. :)

Ooops, thanks for the merge, Brn. Not sure how I missed your thread!

Much like the photo slideshow sniper posted a while back of Sherman tanks being built in one of the Detriot auto factories. An impressive testament to the American manufacturing muscle during the war.

Does seem like a shame that some of these buildings can't be preserved as historical landmarks, or even turned into museums. I'd think it would be pretty damn impressive to see a WW2 aviation museum lodged in one of the factories that actually built the planes!
