Hi there...I am looking for information on my grandfather (father's father) who was reported missing on Dec 1, 1944. Here is what little I now of him:

    Wilhelm Rothbauer
    born August 17, 1906
    married to Paulina Grudl
had five children: Hermonie, Klara, Philip, Adolph and Franz

Wilhelm Rothbauer left for war in later part of November 1944 and a telegraph was received by my grandmother Paulina Grudl Rothbauer in early December that he was reported as missing on Dec 1, 1944. She found out she was pregnant with Franz around Christmas time 1944. I am not sure if they lived in Oberschlesein at the time or Karlsdorf. I do know that most of Wilhelm Rothbauer's family was from Karlsdorf.

I would love to find out what part of the military he served in,his rank and when/where he disappeared. Any assistance anyone could give me would be much appreciated.

    Hello tgit 1
is that what you already have written all the informations you have about your grandfahter? It seemed that one of your family asked at the German searching service of the Red Cross about your grandfather too -the Red Cross normally made an appraisal of what probably happened to your grandpa. Do you or one of your family have this paper? If not ask for a copy of this appraisal. It´s necessary to find out the unit your grandpa fought at the moment he´s missing.
Did you asked at the WAST for informations about your grandpa? There you could get detailed informations about your grandpa, for example in which units he fought for ... But normally it takes a very long to get an answer from the WAST (12 months from asking is normal!) and you have to identy yourself as a near related person. If your grandpa is still living you need a permition from her to get informations! The informations costs around 20 or 30 Euro -it depends how many sheets the report of your grandpa includes ... If you need more informations just ask!

    Michael
P.S.: My grandpa and my grandma were from Oberschlesien as well ...

    Hi tgit 1,

i did a research on your family member at the VDK e.V. They have listed him but only as missed at Oberschlesien and thats what you know. Michael is right with his opinion to ask at the WASt. And my grandpa is from Schlesien too.
Good luck on your search! I add the link to the VDK e.V. there you can see the result.
